Pediatric hiv/aids prevention -

our largest program

The Kapnek Trust is the leading provider of pediatric HIV prevention programs in Zimbabwe.

Working with the Zimbabwe Ministry of Child Health Welfare, Kapnek teams train medical personnel on all aspects of HIV detection and prevention involving pregnant women. This includes testing for HIV, counseling patients and administering drugs to reduce the chance of HIV being transmitted from mother to child during birth.

The number of women accessing these prevention sites has increased over the past four years from about 39,000 to an estimated 100,000 in the current program year.

We now support about 400 delivery centers in 26 districts - an increase of 100 sites over the past year. In the 2008-2009 program year, the Trust will focus on converting sites with more basic prevention efforts to more comprehensive sites, which will offer multi-drug combination therapy. This move to a more complex drug regimen should result in greatly reduced transmission rates.

Our goal is to bring the level of care to that of the developed world - reducing the rate of HIV transmission to 3-5%.
