Programs The J.F. Kapnek Trust focuses on training and expanding the capacity of existing medical programs in Zimbabwe. We invest in people. In our Pediatric AIDS Prevention Program, we teach professionals at birthing centers and hospitals about HIV testing, counseling and how to administer the drugs needed to reduce the risk of HIV being passed from mother to child during birth. Using this “training up” program we reached 100,000 expectant mothers in our past program year. We did this with a staff of about 50 dedicated individuals (and a couple of hardworking pickup trucks!) In our Preschool Program, we renovate abandoned classrooms in elementary schools, train rural women as preschool teachers and pay their salaries. Because we are working with existing buildings, we can do this for a fraction of the cost of building a new school. Headmasters are invested in the success of Kapnek preschools. They supervise the preschool teachers and welcome these well-prepared and healthy children into their kindergarten classes. At the Children’s Rehabilitation Unit in Harare, and through a satellite-based outreach program, we are reaching more than 1,500 children with disabilities in northern Zimbabwe. The CRU offers physical therapy, medical assistance, and training, as well as providing a vital support community for these often isolated families. While The Kapnek Trust believes that children should remain with their immediate or extended families whenever possible, we operate a small family-based orphanage, Vimbainesu Village, for children who have no where else to turn. Our Medical Scholarship Program helps young women complete their high school and college education so they can become the next generation of Zimbabwean medical professionals: doctors, nurses and pharmacists. To date, The Kapnek Trust has helped 37 doctors graduate! Despite challenging conditions, we continue to expand our outreach and level of care year after year with a modest budget and help from donors of all sizes. Click below for details on our programs:
