Scholarships
For more than 20 years, The J.F. Kapnek Trust - U.S. and the J.F. Kapnek Trust - Zimbabwe, has supported upper-high school and university education of promising young Zimbabwean women interested in careers in science and medicine. This program, Strengthening Science through Women (SSW), has provided tuition, fees and books for women who need help to complete their upper grades of high school and to study at university.
Many of these students have gone on to be doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical personnel.
One SSW recipient became a civil engineer. She wrote to update us on her life after she saw a Kapnek vehicle on the road “...this rekindled the memories of an organisation that helped me be where I am today.... I thank your organisation for being at the cornerstone of who I am today. The support I received gave me a great foundation on which to build my future. I feel greatly empowered.”
Another Kapnek scholarship recipient who received help to study for her college entrance examinations, e-mailed us from Yale University in Connecticut:
“The busy road I use when entering my residential college is very unlike the dirt road that leads up my home (in Zimbabwe). It would be accurate to note that I probably would not be here today if it were not for the J.F. Kapnek Trust and particularly the SSW program... I would not have been able to cross the Atlantic Ocean had I not completed my ‘A’ levels, and I most certainly would not have gotten to Yale.
“That is why the trust needs to continue, so that those who come after us can have their bridges built and be helped towards achieving their goals. ... I am still a Kapnek student because everywhere I go, it will be as a product of the SSW program.”
The Trust has supported the education of many such professionals - including 37 doctors to date.
